Body Image

What is body image? Many people have a different opinion when it comes to defining body image. What do I mean by this? Well, most people’s image of their body comes from the media and society as a whole. My goal is to enlighten you about body image and how perspectives affect us.

Your Perspective

How do you see your body? What is your perception of your body image? What do you see when you look in the mirror? Is it a confident, healthy person? Think about it, you will be surprised with your answers. Most of the time an individual’s outlook is not even their own. Your perspective should count on most occasions in life, however we discount a lot of information. Also your perspective can be distorted, your thoughts about body image can be too negative or positive depending on what you adopt. Your perception becomes your reality.

Society

People are often looking at people and passing judgments as it relates to body image. We cannot help it, it is the world we live in today. Look at all the products that are sold because of society’s perception of our images. For example you have magazines, diet pills, health products, clothes and much more. These are some of the products that push the envelope as it relates to body image. Society will continue to say what the best images are. However, keep in mind perceptions of body image are subject to change.

Compare & Contrast

Sometimes magazines are praising Kim Kardashian for her bodacious curves and amazing figure. However that’s not to say fans don’t admire the elegance and tone body of a slim Taylor Swift. These two individuals could not be more opposite from each other, but are both appreciated. Comparing and contrasting information can be positive in these regards. As a college professor, I observe the perspective and outlook of students constantly in order to gain a clearer understanding of them. One particular exercise stands out. The students are required to draw themselves on one side of their paper, then turn it over and draw an image of how others see them. The perception was completely different in most cases.

Understanding a Healthy Mindset

Most people’s perspectives are not favorable when it comes to body image. As stated earlier, we are constantly collecting information from many sources which affect how we see our body image. What can we do to promote a healthier self esteem? Perhaps eliminate the extremes, while looking at the good things about us. Remember the comparison between Kim K and Taylor Swift. Think about it, most people fail to realize that many appreciate their body image. However, there is the exception to the rule, obesity.

Create Your Own Reality

If you are over weight and your mental health is suffering, do something about it. You can make adjustments in your eating and become active. You should consider reducing 1/ 4 of your calories during each meal and replacing soft drinks with water. Also walk twice daily, once during the morning and before you go to sleep. This will make a significant difference in your mindset and appearance. You don’t have to be a gym rat in order to be fit! If you have health problems please consult with your physician before starting an exercise regimen. Perception is reality, good luck!
